Necklace of shame

Also known as the "cone of shame", it is an element that is placed on the dog's neck to prevent it from biting, licking or hurting a certain area.

It is mainly used after an operation or veterinary treatment.

As it is usually quite annoying and stressful for them from Novecan we have incorporated this excellent solution for our dogs and cats.

Thanks to the Elizabethan collar from Novecan our animals are not restricted in their daily life, compared to the usual collars.

The vision and hearing of the dog or cat is not influenced.

It is made of dense foam, covered with water and dirt repellent nylon and is flexible when passing through doorways or near other dogs/people.

Allows the animal to eat or drink on a regular basis and is reusable. Hand washable.

To obtain the correct size it is advisable to measure the perimeter of your pet's neck. Once we have the measurement we go to the "sizes" tab and select the correct size.

Also known as the "cone of shame", the Isabelline collar is an element that is placed around the neck of the dog or cat to prevent it from biting, licking or hurting a certain area. It is used especially after an operation or veterinary treatment. As it is usually quite annoying for them, in the following article we will tell you exactly what the Elizabethan collar is and what are the alternatives to the Elizabethan collar.

What is the Elizabethan collar?

Before we start with the alternatives, let us explain what exactly this item is. The Elizabethan collar is a tool placed by health professionals after a surgery or accident that required stitches. In these cases, as the dog can reach almost any area of the body with its snout when it has been operated on, it is normal for it to try to tear out the stitches, wanting to heal the wound itself (which of course generates pain, itching and discomfort). To avoid licking, biting or scratching, the "Elizabethan collar" has been invented. The main objective is that the animal does not cause injury or infection in the wound.

The problem with the Elizabethan collar is that it is very uncomfortable for animals. When a dog has an Elizabethan collar, it may not want to walk, may bump into furniture, walls and people, may be depressed, may not want to eat or drink water, may growl or show its teeth when someone approaches it, etc. Even so, don't worry because at the end of this post we offer you the best alternative. We would like to give you some advice if your vet has fitted your dog with an Elizabethan collar:

  • Motivate him to walk. Stand in front of him so he can see you and guide him.
  • Let him move freely around the house and let him get used to the collar.
  • Try to move objects that could hurt him/her.
  • Do not try to put your hand inside the collar without the animal seeing you first.
  • Elevate food and water containers (e.g. on a stool) for better access.
  • Check that the Elizabethan collar is not squeezing his neck too tightly, or preventing him from eating, drinking or breathing normally.
  • Place a small pillow for a more comfortable sleep.

Alternatives to the Elizabethan collar

If no matter how much you have done everything possible to provide comfort to your pet, he is still trying to get rid of that annoying cone, here we tell you what are the most effective alternatives to the Elizabethan collar:

1. T-shirt

It can be used for minor injuries to the forelimbs. No need to buy anything, just use a T-shirt that you no longer wear. Tie the sleeves around your waist. If the wound or surgery is on the abdomen, a short-sleeved T-shirt knotted at the back is best. For hindquarter wounds, wear a short-sleeved shirt inside out (tail in the neck hole and paws in the sleeves). If you choose this option, you will have to remove the T-shirt when you take him for a walk, as he will not be able to relieve himself (it will look like a nappy).

2. Socks

One of the excellent alternatives to the Elizabethan collar if your pet has wounds on its paws is to put socks on it, so that it cannot easily access them and bite or injure itself. You can use an elastic band just in case (making sure it doesn't get too tight or cut off circulation).

3. Comfortable" necklaces

One of the problems with Isabelline collars is that they are very uncomfortable. The good news is that at Novecan we sell a cushioned version that is much more pleasant: The Collar for dogs. When your dog or cat wants to lie down, it will not have a hard plastic pillow, but a soft cushion. With this type of collar your pet retains peripheral vision, but cannot access the wounds to bite or lick them.
